19 Mar 2018 (Quito, Ecuador): We walked up a lot of stairs inside the Basilica del Voto Nacional (a huge and beautiful church). I’m always a little conflicted about magnificent religion-based architecture. I don’t know how much the people who lived here had to suffer to build it (maybe they were totally cool with that); I’m bummed that it has to be religion that has the organizing power and vision to make something so grand; and I wonder how else they could have used all of those resources. Anyway, from up top, I thought this was a pretty interesting block. And this high school might even look pretty grand if it weren’t directly next to a ginormous church.
